Nature & Culture (Travels with C.) captures the memories of an actual journey and the conversations that accompanied it. Celebrating meandering, unexpected discoveries and flights of the imagination encountered and embarked upon, the work also pays homage to the spirit of generosity that generated the conditions for the experience to emerge. Offered as a token of gratitude and more importantly perhaps, to create tangible bonds of affection for the future.

What can be in a Souvenir Box?
“The souvenir is the complement to the exciting experience,” Walter Benjamin wrote in ‘Central Park’. “In it is marked the increasing self-alienation of the person who has inventoried his past as dead possessions. In the nineteenth century allegory abandoned the outside world to settle down in the inner world. Relics come from corpses, the souvenir from the extinguished experience which, euphemistally, calls itself lived experience.”

The white house looks abandoned and neglected, the thick white paint has caught the dust as if painted in a rush and is cracking in places. But when the roof is lifted a dark velvet-lined chamber opens to the sounds of a tinkling melody, holding snippets of childhood memories printed on and stitched into the fabric of life.

Paradise fruit (2010/11) - a magic artifact in a bag

In the world of dreams and fairytales there are many wondrous things. Golden apples with magical properties grow in the enchanted orchards of castles, pomegranates come from far-away lands with their sweet seeds that glisten like rubies and heal our sorrows. In the Garden of Eden a tree carries fruit that promises knowledge to those who eat it. Some fruits are forbidden, others can be dangerous like the poisoned apple that sends Snow-White to sleep.

Handsome knights and brave princesses, on horseback or magic carpets, undertake long, arduous journeys into unknown territories, weathering storms, fighting evil and overcoming obstacles in search of such miraculous fruits. Once they have found the object of their desire, they take great care to look after it, love and cherish their treasure like the apple of their eye.

The Paradise fruit comes from the secret garden of my imagination, and has grown under my hands. It is not edible, but it too has magical properties. A precious thing, it is kept in a jeweled bag made from sumptuous velvet embellished with silver, its shiny edges rustling as we gently squeeze it in our hands. The bag is delightful to look at, but it only when we touch that we are drawn deep into its enchanted circle.

Touch is always reciprocal: we can see without being seen, but we cannot touch without being touched. The eyes can see from afar, but to touch we must get close. Vision is fast, touch takes time or, as tactile artist Rosalind Driscoll says, vision is the hare to the tortoise of touch.

Brightly coloured fabric peeps out behind the silver edges of the bag; undoing a button set with sparkling diamonds the bag half-opens and we can feel the soft and smooth texture of the colour lining. With a pull and a pop the content of the bag is finally revealed: the Paradise fruit in a nest of bright colours, crowned with a jeweled velvet flower, its soft segments’ edges glittering with silvery threads like frozen dew.

When we hold the fruit in our hands, squeeze, stroke and poke it gently, it responds to the warmth of our touch as if acknowledging our presence. Colours change, brighten and lighten, as if the fruit was blushing with the pleasure of being held, admired and appreciated. As we marvel at the transient marks left by our fingers upon the fruit’s sensitive skin, we can see the power of touch and feel its magic. This might be a good time to make a wish: maybe it will be granted and the next frog we kiss will turn into the gorgeous prince (or princess) we deserve. Never underestimate the power of stories.

Watergarden

In the dry and arid lands of Schehezerade, water is of the upmost importance. In the luxurious gardens surrounding the palaces of the Arabian tales, the sound of water could be heard everywhere to refresh and delight the body and spirit. Like a murmur, its crisp sound arises from below the surface as we enter the Water Garden with our hands, gently exploring its features. Untying the ribbons, themselves watery bands flowing across the gardens like little streams, undulating pools are revealed with their glittering reflections of silvery threads, mirrored circles and shiny pearls. Among the waters a strange plant with thick curling leaves grows from a plot of red-hot earth, fed perhaps by an underground spring below the surface. Next to a shiny pool with its round mother-of-pearl islands, there is a small hill. Opening the zip on top of it, a thin cloth floating with transparent flower petals can be gently pulled out from between its sharp teeth to spill over the garden like a waterfall, cascading into the pools and pouring into the dry earth.

This has meant that people who could particularly benefit from handling and touching objects, can sometimes be excluded from art and reminiscence sessions. Leicestershire’s Open Museum Service was keen to find a solution to this. Working in consultation with carers, art therapists in Leicestershire care homes, and a Senior Lecturer on dementia from De Montfort University, two new interactive Touch Tables have been created."

Velvet Underground

Velvet Underground
Inspired by the work of Hundertwasser and Gaudi and their imaginative re-invention of the urban landscape, this piece is a flat-packed urban map of a strange and enchanted city. Buttoned down the woolen flaps protect what is underneath like a warm blanket, unbuttoned they rise up high like soft, wavy walls above a soft underground of jewelled colours and precious fabrics, of velvet, silk and glittery shiny cloth and threads. Through this strange and silent cityscape the hands can wander and meander, the fingers almost sinking into the soft ground as they explore textures and surfaces. In the round sloping façades above and around the underground, the buttonholes become windows, tear or rain drop openings, while the buttons on the ground turn into central features that stand out like roof top fountains, sculptures or cupolas, hard and cold against the warmth of the fabrics.

“Unshadowed, white, clean, artificial – the space is devoted to the technology of esthetics,” Brian O’Doherty wrote in his famous 1976 essay on the modern white cube gallery; among “ungrubby surfaces […] untouched by time and its vicissitudes,” the visitor is expected to be no more than a spectator: “while eyes and minds are welcome, space occupying bodies are not.”

Unlike the old Towner Gallery with its creaking floorboards, lived-in past and crumbling surfaces so visibly touched by the vicissitudes of time, the new Towner has been built in the tradition of the modernist temples of art, dedicated to safeguarding the artwork and keeping visitors in awe and at bay.

300 Spectators pays homage to the gallery visitors’ undesired and absent bodies, creating a small space for their comfort. Making visual reference to the rows of seats found in the Congress Theatre next door with whom the gallery shares a wall and a cultural space, the piece plays with affinities of audiences on both sides of the wall.

The 300 miniature, minimalist armchairs, measuring 8cm x 8cm x 8cm each, arranged in neat rows, from a distance look like a colourful patchwork. Made from fabrics and wallpaper, they bring a touch of private home comforts into the public gallery space. Some seem similarly ‘dressed’ at first glance, yet at closer inspection each of the seats, like the visitors they are dedicated to, is different.

Who is looking at what? Is 300 Spectators to be interpreted as a critique of the gallery, a comment on visuality, or a cultural ‘borrowers’ auditorium? Whatever else it might be, first and foremost it was made for the delight and enjoyment of the visitors, to entice their own imaginations irrespective of the makers’ intentions and thoughts.

Solveigh Goett was born in Germany in 1953, and has lived in the UK since 1985. She completed her MA in Sequential Design & Illustration at the University of Brighton in 2003 and a practice-based PhD on the subject of everyday textiles and memory in 2010 at the University of East London. She has exhibited widely both in the UK (Eastbourne, Lewes, Brighton, Bristol, London) and abroad (Germany, Lithuania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, France, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark, France, Belgium and Austria). As an artist/researcher she frequently presents her work at international conferences and symposia, and has published in journals such as the Working Papers for Art and Design. She currently works as a free-lance artist, researcher, lecturer and writer, both literally and metaphorically engaging with the manifold and multiple matters of the fabric of life. Jean Hoad was born in Liverpool in 1956 and has lived in Eastbourne since 1973. She studied 3-D Design at the University of Brighton (2000 - 2003). With a strong interest in outsider art and a firm belief in Beuys’s maxime that everybody is an artist, she abandoned the more conventional art school environment in favour of working with severely disabled adults, helping them to achieve a better quality of life through creative endeavours. Her own work has benefited from her experience of working with others, seeing the world through their eyes and making sense of it through their hands. Her art reflects her love of nature and a concern with environmental and social issues and could be described as situated at the threshold between nature and culture. She has created site-specific installations and sculptures in a variety of outdoor locations, including the Sussex Downs, North Wales and the South of France. Her work is part of private collections and she has undertaken several commissions.

Silk Road Shrine
Somewhere along the long Silk Road that stretches all the way from the Far East into our factories, shops and wardrobes, I imagine a burial ground for silk worms. This shrine, made entirely from the fruits of their labour, marks a site of loss and luxury, death and desire, gives presence, in homage, to absence. If silkworms had souls – and maybe they do – this shrine would be their meeting place.

Refuge for Lost Souls
Like a mountain refuge for the tired wanderer, this is a resting place for the wandering soul, still unsure of its destiny. Like a roadside shrine at a mountain pass, it gives temporary shelter and comfort at the crossroad where the domestic and the uncanny, pale nothingness and the red lifeblood of becoming meet and mingle, where edges blur and Euclidian space sprouts hyperbolic growth. This is a place for decisions yet to be taken.

"There is a new book out on embroidery, which I have put together: 'Fäden verbinden - threads unite.' It was published by MARO Verlag in Augsburg, Germany.
It has a square format of 16cm by 16cm with120 pages. It is a paperback edition with over 300 fotos, which I took during my visit in Laghmani and 16 of fotos which show works from the exhibition "Threads unite women" and scanned embroisered squares. Through the sale of that book I hope to make a little money for myself, since I continue my voluntary work for the project. Whoever wants to support me, may order the book from me. That way I will get almost the percentage that normally goes to the bookseller. Promoting my book will also be of great help.

Or you can find it at the exhibition at the 'Gudrun Sjöden' store in Zirndorf, at 'Textile Art Berlin' which will start in two weeks, at 'Nadel und Faden' in Osnabrück from the 11th to the 13th of September as well as at the Alsace EU-Patchwork meeting, which will take place from the 17th to the 20th of September.

Es gibt ein neues Buch! Es ist das erste zum Stickprojekt in Afghanistan, das ich gestaltet habe: 'Fäden verbinden, threads unite'. Erschienen ist es beim MARO Verlag in Ausgburg. Es hat 120 Seiten in einem kleinen quadratischen Format (16 x 16 cm), brochiert und festcover mit über 300 Farbfotos, die ich in Laghmani aufgenommen habe und 16 Abbildungen von Werken von der Ausstellung 'Fäden verbinden Frauen', dazu eingescannte gestickte Quadrate. Der Text ist auf Deutsch und Englisch. Ab September gibt es dann auch ein Leaflet mit Übersetzung auf Französisch für diejenigen, die es wünschen. Der verbindliche Preis liegt bei € 20.

Durch den Verkauf des Buches erhoffe ich - naiverweise - ein wenig für mich persönlich zu verdienen, weil ich weiterhin ehrenamtlich für das Projekt arbeite. Wer mich unterstützen will, kann es also bei mir bestellen. So bekomme ich fast so viele Prozente wie der Buchhandel erhält. Auch Werbung machen hilft mir!

Following last year’s successful event, Eastbourne Blind Society is hosting again a tactile art exhibition as part of Eastbourne Festival. “In Touch Again” will take place from 18 – 20 April 2009 and showcase work by the members of the society’s art and craft group alongside tactile work by guest artists. This is a unique and groundbreaking local event celebrating inclusive art: bringing together community arts and professional artists, widening access to art beyond vision by breaking the all too familiar touch taboo. Visitors are encouraged to experience art not just through their eyes, but also through their hands.

CLEANSING: Outdoor installation at the Redoubt Fortress

A site-specific installation on the upper circle of the fortress, where guns and cannons point towards the sea & town. Next to each cannon, there is a black, wall-mounted iron ring, reminiscent of a bathroom towel holder. I am hanging a white towel on each of these, each towel embroidered in red with one of the sufferings of war. The museum’s website describes the Redoubt Fortress as “Eastbourne’s hidden treasure”, “a perfect setting for … rich military collections” – yet when I think of the military, different associations come to mind. The blood that has been and continues to be shed in our names in military operations around the world can never be washed off our hands.

"The Redoubt Fortress will become a hub of arts activity for Eastbourne Festival 2009! The show, entitled CIRCUMNAVIGATION will feature new work from the Blue Monkey Artists, Wycliffe Stutchbury, Cat Ingrams, Alison Haddon and Judith Alder. In addition they have invited selected South Coast artists, Sharon Haward, Mike Newman, Sally Colledge, Grace Powell, Rowena Easton, Solveigh Goett, Terence Kershaw and Paul Bartholomew to join them in the exhibition.The work will respond to The Redoubt Fortress, its architecture and varied history and will include drawing, sculpture, printmaking, installation, photography, textile and text-based work. In addition, the weekend of the 18th and 19th April will feature contemporary site-specific performance entitled ‘Navigators’ by Clare Whistler, with Sophia Ferman, Sam Barker, Lloyd Thomas and the all female foursome, The Gyg.

Admission: Special Festival admission charges from 11th to 26th April with a festival brochure: Adults £2, Seniors £1.50, Children £1, Family ticket £5. Due to steps at each entrance disabled access is limited. Please phone to arrange access for wheelchair users via a stairclimber if necessary."

This workshop will launch a new pilot project for the multicultural community textile group, Textiles for Peace. They plan to create a large, life size fabric book. The theme will be the story and journeys of each of our lives and of our families. Each person will create their own page . This will be a chronicle of all sorts of aspects of our lives including a history of what is worn in different cultures. Solveigh Goett will help with the development of ideas and the techniques needed. 11am-4pm. £15 fee. Not suitable for young children.

GET IN TOUCH: TACTILE ART AT EASTBOURNE BLIND SOCIETY

Eastbourne Blind Society are holding their first art exhibition as part of Eastbourne Festival from Saturday 15 March to Monday 17 March at their centre in 124 – 142 Longstone Road.

This exciting new event will showcase an array of art and craft work by members of the society alongside tactile art especially created for the occasion by guest artists Judith Alder, Sarah-Faye Brett, Jean Hoad, Maureen Pelling, Grace Powell and Irene Runayker.

“We are dedicated to promoting inclusive art,” Deirdre Dean, administrator of Eastbourne Blind Society, explains, “art that is accessible to visually impaired people and exploring art through the sense of touch. It is very exciting for us to be taking part in the Eastbourne Festival this year.”

“Through the enthusiasm and commitment of Solveigh Goett, Betty Burge and a dedicated team of volunteer helpers, we encourage blind and visually impaired people to experiment with various forms of art and craft. Despite loss of vision they are creating beautiful work. The art and craft afternoons are an opportunity to be creative and social and are immensely beneficial to many who have lost their confidence or become isolated through their sight loss.”

The three-day exhibition will end with a talk by artist and researcher Solveigh Goett, University of East London, who has led the art and craft workshop since November 2006 and has a special interest in the role of the senses in making and experiencing art.

The exhibition will be open on Saturday 15 March 2008 2 – 6 pm, Sunday 16 March 2008 11am – 4pm, Monday 17 March 10am – 4pm. The talk ‘Not Just For The Eyes: Art and the Senses’ takes place on Monday 17 March at 2.30pm. Admission is free, but spaces are limited, so booking is essential – please email eastbourneblind@btconnect.com or phone 01323 729 511.

There will also be stalls with information on the participating artists, the activities and services provided by Eastbourne Blind Society and other subjects to do with art and visual impairment as well as work for sale.

Eastbourne Blind Society is a local, independent voluntary organisation committed to supporting blind and visually impaired people in Eastbourne through welfare visiting, social activities, advice and encouragement.
